January is Mental Wellness Month, and since it’s also the first month of the new year, it’s a great opportunity to check in with yourself and discover ways that you can improve your overall mental health and wellness. To start off the new year, we are sharing some helpful mental wellness tips that you can incorporate into your everyday life to help maintain a happier and healthier mindset.
1. Keep yourself active by exercising.
A healthy body and healthy mind go hand-in-hand. Exercising has been proven to reduce stress, as well as keep you physically strong and fit. Adding thirty minutes of moderate exercise to your schedule at least three days a week can aid in improving your overall well-being.
2. Learn to better manage your stress.
Stress can be overwhelming, particularly early in the year when there is so much to do following the busy holiday season. At the start of each day or week, make a to-do list of the tasks that need to be done. By doing so, you can prioritize what your deadlines are and figure out the best times to complete things based on their importance.
3. Learn a new hobby or participate in a new activity.
Start a new hobby that interests you, or sign up for a class or workshop happening at a local community center or library. Learning new skills can help keep your brain active and healthy, and being around others can lead to new and enriching relationships.
4. Maintain a balanced diet.
Good nutrition is a natural defense against stress and negative emotions. Starting your day with a nutritious breakfast helps to kick-start your metabolism so you don’t overeat the remainder of the day.
5. Ensure you are getting enough sleep.
While many of us struggle to squeeze in 5-6 hours of sleep a night, let alone 8, it truly is important to catch up on your sleep when you have free time. Getting enough sleep helps to make your more alert during the day and can improve your memory and reactions to stress.
